Thanksgiving 2021: Grateful for Technology That Made Remote Work Possible
Thanksgiving 2021 comes nearly two years into a pandemic that forced rapid technology adaptation.
As we gather (virtually or in person) for Thanksgiving, it's worth being grateful for technology that made business continuity possible through unprecedented disruption.
Grateful for Cloud Services
Practices dependent on on-premise servers struggled in March 2020. Those already using cloud services adapted smoothly.
Email Anywhere
Office 365 and Google Workspace meant email worked from home as well as from office. No complicated VPN setup, no remote desktop struggles.
Staff transitioned to remote work without losing email access.
Files Accessible Everywhere
OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive. Files accessible from home computers, personal devices, anywhere.
No more "I need to go to the office to get that file."
SaaS Applications
Practice management software, billing systems, scheduling. Cloud-based applications worked from anywhere with internet.
This enabled continued operations when offices closed.
Grateful for Video Conferencing
Video conferencing went from occasional tool to daily essential:
Team Communication
Zoom, Teams, Webex. Video calls replaced conference room meetings. Not perfect, but enabled continued collaboration.
Telehealth
Medical practices conducted video visits with patients. Dentists did video consultations. Healthcare continued when in-person wasn't safe or practical.
Client Meetings
Law firms and accounting firms met with clients virtually. Business continued despite physical separation.
Grateful for Remote Access Technology
VPN technology that existed for years became critical infrastructure:
Secure Connections
VPNs allowed secure access to office resources from home. Not as convenient as cloud but enabled access to on-premise systems.
Remote Desktop
Remote desktop technology let staff access office computers from home. Clunky but functional.
Support Tools
Remote support tools allowed IT support without physical access. Problems got resolved without on-site visits.
Grateful for Collaboration Tools
Chat and Messaging
Slack, Teams, other chat platforms. Replaced hallway conversations and quick desk visits.
Real-time communication without email or phone calls.
Document Collaboration
Multiple people editing same documents simultaneously. Track changes, comments, version history.
Collaboration across locations that would have been impossible years ago.
Project Management
Tools for tracking tasks, projects, deadlines across distributed teams. Visibility into who's doing what without physical presence.
Grateful for Home Internet
Reliable home internet infrastructure made remote work possible:
Broadband Availability
Most areas have broadband internet available. Remote work requires good internet. Generally, it exists.
Increasing Capacity
Internet providers increased capacities to handle surge in home usage. Networks mostly held up despite massive increase in demand.
Mobile Backup
Cellular internet provided backup when home internet failed. Not perfect but better than nothing.
Grateful for Security Technology
Remote work created security challenges. Technology helped address them:
Multi-Factor Authentication
MFA prevented account takeover even when credentials leaked. Critical for remote access security.
Endpoint Protection
Security software on individual devices. Protected laptops working from home networks.
Cloud Backup
Automatic backups of remote devices. Data protected even when staff worked from home.
Grateful for Vendor Adaptability
Software and service vendors adapted quickly to pandemic reality:
Remote Implementation
Vendors shifted to remote software implementations. New systems deployed without on-site visits.
Remote Support
Vendor support went fully remote. Problems resolved via screen sharing and remote access.
Flexible Licensing
Many vendors provided flexible licensing for remote work scenarios, temporary access increases, or deployment changes.
Grateful for Staff Flexibility
Technology enables, but people make it work:
Learning New Tools
Staff learned video conferencing, collaboration tools, new workflows. Often with minimal training time.
Adapting Workflows
Processes designed for office work adapted for remote operations. Staff figured out how to do their jobs differently.
Technical Troubleshooting
Staff became better at basic technical troubleshooting. Had to, when IT couldn't just walk over to help.
What Didn't Exist or Didn't Work
Worth noting what we didn't have or what struggled:
Practices on Paper
Practices still operating on paper records struggled badly. Digital systems were essential for remote work.
On-Premise Only Systems
Systems that only worked from office locations created major challenges. Cloud services had huge advantage.
Poor Home Internet
Areas without good broadband struggled. Remote work requires decent internet. Where it doesn't exist, remote work doesn't work.
Lasting Changes
Nearly two years in, some pandemic changes are permanent:
Hybrid Work
Many practices now operate hybrid: some days office, some remote. Technology that enabled pandemic remote work enables permanent flexibility.
Cloud Adoption
Pandemic accelerated cloud migration by years. Practices that might have migrated in 2023-2024 did it in 2020-2021.
Video Meetings
Video conferencing isn't going away. It's now standard tool even for practices back in offices full-time.
Remote Support
IT support shifted from primarily on-site to primarily remote. This is more efficient and often faster.
This Thanksgiving
Be grateful for:
- Cloud services that worked from anywhere
- Video conferencing that kept communication alive
- Home internet that made remote work possible
- Security tools that protected distributed teams
- Vendors who adapted quickly
- Staff who learned and adapted
- Technology infrastructure that mostly held up under unprecedented stress
March 2020 was chaos. But technology infrastructure built over years provided foundation for rapid adaptation.
Practices survived. Many thrived. Business continued through pandemic because technology made it possible.
Our Gratitude
At Robell Technologies, we're grateful for:
- Clients who trusted us to help them adapt to remote work
- Technology that mostly worked when needed most
- Vendor partners who supported rapid changes
- Team members who worked around the clock in March-April 2020
Ten years of building cloud infrastructure and remote capabilities paid off when pandemic hit. Practices we'd migrated to cloud adapted smoothly. Those we helped implement remote access kept operating.
To our clients: thank you for your patience during pandemic chaos, your flexibility as we all learned together, and your trust as we navigated unprecedented challenges.
This Thanksgiving, we're thankful for technology that enabled business continuity, kept healthcare accessible, allowed legal services to continue, and enabled financial services through crisis.
Happy Thanksgiving. May your connections stay strong, your backups stay good, and your technology continue enabling whatever comes next.
